Egyptian Sports Journalist and Editor for Goal.com,Egypt, Ahmed Atta says Ghana should rather focus on winning the 2017 AFCON rather than thinking about dislodging Egypt from the top spot of Ghana’s World Cup group.
Ghana together with Uganda,Mali and Egypt are drawn in Group D of the upcoming AFCON in Gabon which starts on Saturday and interestingly Ghana, Uganda and Egypt are also drawn in same World Cup qualifying group and thus making encounters among the three countries at Gabon 2017 even more enticing.
Speaking on Kasapa AFCON Magic, Kasapa Sports’ dedicated show for the 2017 AFCON on Wednesday, Ahmed Atta touted Ghana as one of the favourites at the upcoming AFCON.
According to him, Ghana’s performances at recent AFCONs does make Ghana a force to reckon with even though he believes current results in the ongoing World Cup qualifiers have not been good for the 4-time AFCON winners.
“I think Group D is going to be a very difficult one. Uganda were adjudged the best football team at the CAF awards that was held some few days ago and Mali have always been a difficult team to play. Both Mali and Uganda are not going to be walkovers but the experience of Ghana is going to count. I believe Ghana should focus on the upcoming AFCON since their chances of making it to the World Cup is quite slim now but it all depends on how Ghana plays it out, whether they will focus on the AFCON or lose concentration”, he explained.
Meanwhile, Ahmed Atta has played down the favourite tag on the Pharaohs of Egypt at Gabon 2017. He says their long absence from the tournament coupled with the fact that they are still rebuilding makes it quite difficult to put Egypt in that bracket.
