The Director, Faculty of Academic Affairs & Research, at the Kofi Annan International Peace-Keeping Centre (KAIPC) Dr Kwesi Aning, has said under no circumstance should Ghana ever legalize the use of marijuana locally known as ‘wee’.
Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Ghana Standards Authority (GSA), Prof. Alex Dodoo, recently joined the call for the legalization of marijuana.
Prof Baidoo who was speaking to the Public Accounts Committee of Parliament after being asked to answer some infractions in their Audited Report explained that Ghana could benefit greatly from the export proceeds of the plant.
According to him, the economic potential of marijuana for the country is huge, stressing that it was about time authorities came up with a firm decision on taking advantage of the herb.
Prof. Dodoo who is also a trained pharmacist explained that in advanced countries like the United Kingdom, United States of America (USA) marijuana use for either social or medicinal purpose is legal.
“In UK, for instance, one can purchase nicely and neatly packaged marijuana from stores for both medical and social use,” he said.
“Even though Ghana does not need the medical use of the drug, it will gain immensely from its exportation if it is legalized,” the GSA boss maintained.
But speaking to Bola Ray on Starr Chat on Starr FM, Dr Aning thinks otherwise saying there’ll be dire consequences for the country should marijuana be legalized in Ghana.
“In 2009, the Secretary General of the UN asked me to do a West Africa wide study so I travelled around West Africa for several months and located myself within smugglers, violent extremist groups and in almost every single country where there’s marijuana production and transformation of the ‘wee’ leaves itself into oil those countries have had several problems. Côte d’Ivoire, Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger, Mauritania. It’s not just about marijuana as a recreational drug, we don’t have the resources to deal with those who get hooked onto it. Normally, marijuana is just the beggining before you get onto something else. Marijuana oil is dangerous and it’s powerful, I just don’t get these powerful men who wait until they leave office and say let’s legalize it.”
