The people of Upper Denkyira West Constituency in the Central Region are pleading with President Nana Akufo Addo to reinstate their District Chief Executive(DCE) Daniel Appianing who was asked to step aside in June, 2017.
He was relieved of his position by President Akufo Addo following his unguarded comment on the death of Major Maxwell Mahama who was gruesomely lynched in Denkyira Obuasi, a statement many said was in bad taste.
Ghana was thrown into a state of despair on Monday, May 29, 2017, when the news of the murder of a military officer detailed at Denkyira-Obuasi in the Central Region broke.
Major Maxwell Mahama of the 5th Infantry Battalion was heading a military detachment to the area to fight illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.
Following the incident, the DCE for the area, Mr. Appiannin told journalists that he was unaware that the military officer was part of a detachment to the area to assist in the fight against galamsey.
“There is a large number of military personnel protecting the Chinese and the lynched soldier is alleged to be part of it. In fact, he is said to be the leader … I am shocked they are not briefing you very well but rather claiming they are here to fight galamseyers,” he was quoted as saying.
President Akufo-Addo, incensed by the expression of the DCE, ordered him out of office.
However five months down the line, the residents say the absence of their DCE is adversely affecting development in the area as they lack basic amenities, making life in the area difficult.
The governing New Patriotic Party(NPP) Constituency Youth Organizer for Upper Denkyira West, Mathew Asare, in an interview with Kasapa News, said after the creation of the district during the Kufour regime, the area has not seen any major development, adding that now is the right time for the NPP government to promote development in the District.
“We continue to humbly plead with President Akufo Addo to bring back our DCE, Daniel Appianing who was also the former NPP constituency Chairman for upper Denkyira West, because he’s the right person to handle this district. He worked very hard to ensure victory for the NPP, the President should show him mercy and reinstate him.”
