The Ashanti Regional Police Command has placed pledged to reward anyone who helps in the arrest of armed robbers who shot and killed a police officer in Kumasi in the Ashanti Region with an amount of GHC 5,000.
The officer, Corporal Frank Essel, a driver with the SWAT Unit at the Ashanti Regional police headquarters was shot on May 19 after the armed robbers stormed a hotel at Dichemmuoso in Kumasi.
He was shot in his vehicle parked in the premises of Open Space Hotel.
The masked armed men are said to have entered the hotel at about 9p.m. and ordered two receptionists on duty to take them round rooms of guests in the hotel.
As the receptionists delayed, the armed robbers shot one of them. Sensing danger, the other person escaped.
It yet to be established how Corporal Frank Essel who had his police uniform hanging in the front seat of the Benz car was shot. His bullet–ridden body was found behind the steering wheel of his car.
ASP Mohammed Tanko, Public Relations Officer of the Ashanti Regional Police Command in an interview said the Regional CID has taken over the investigations of the case and assured that perpetrators will be brought to book in due time.
