Minister for Youth & Sports, Nii Lantey Vanderpuye, says the Ministry is seeking donor funding and Public Private Partnership arrangements to construct sports stadia in Ho, Koforidua, Sunyani, Wa and Bolgatanga.
The initiative, he noted, is in line with government’s long-term strategic plan to construct one sports stadium in each regional capital.
Already the Ministry has constructed sports stadia in the Greater Accra, Ashanti, Western, Northern and the Central Regions.
Mr. Vanderpuye made this observation when answering to some questions relating to the Ministry of Youth & Sports on the floor of the House, Monday.
His response was in connection to a question asked by the MP for Fanteakwa South, Kofi Okyere-Agyekum over what plans the Ministry have to build a sports stadium in the Eastern Region.
Mr. Vandapuye commenting further said in the absence of funds to construct a sports stadium facility, the ministry was collaborating with the local government ministry to construct multipurpose sporting facilities in the eastern region to promote lesser known sports as a stop gap measure.
“Mr. Speaker, the Ministry of Local Government is collaborating with the Ministry of Youth & Sports through the Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) to develop what we called multipurpose sports facilities across the region”.
“In fact, as we are talking now, we have finished with the design and we will be bringing it to the House to look at it and when it is approved through the Local Government Committee – we’re seeking their support”.
“What we want to do is that we don’t want to build only football parks but sports infrastructure so that other talents in the other sporting disciplines will also have the opportunity of exploiting their talents”.
“The multipurpose sports facility we are building will have a room for volley, football, handball, basketball and also tennis in one place. So, if you want to play football, you just have to fix the posts and if you want to play volleyball you remove the football posts and erect the volleyball net. That is what we want to do in the interim”, he noted in a follow up question asked by the MP for Akim Swedru, Kennedy Osei Nyarko.
