Anti illegal mining Taskforce, Operations Vanguard is challenging the media and the public to provide evidence of extortion in their operations.

The Army/Police Taskforce has been criticized by a section of the media and the public for allegedly extorting monies from some illegal miners since they began their operations last year.

Public Relations Officer for the Taskforce, Sqn Leader Robinson Omane Agyei is therefore appealing to the general public to volunteer credible information which will lead to the arrest of people who go round impersonating them.

According to the group it has arrested 1,555 illegal miners out of which 159 are Chinese nationals.

He spoke to Empire News’ Emmanuel Ohene –Gyan at the sidelines of a day’s sensitization forum organized by the Media Coalition against Illegal Mining at Nsuaem in the Tarkwa municipality of the Western Region.

Meanwhile a Senior Research Scientist with the CSIR of the Water Research Institute, Dr. Anthony Duah is making a strong case for illegal mining to be criminalized as part of measures to curb the menace.
