The Governing Council of the University of Education, Winneba has taken a swipe at the University Teachers Association of Ghana(UTAG) describing their posture in the UEW impasse as hypocritical.
The governing council criticized the University Teachers Association for misinforming the public on the barrage of issues confronting the University lately.
“The President of UTAG, Dr. Eric Opoku Mensah is clearly aware that in all Universities where governing Council is in-charge of the governance structure, the Vice Chancellor cannot dismiss any senior member. Dismissal or termination of appointment is always at the instance of the governing Council and never that of the Vice chancellor. The Governing Council takes full responsibility of the disciplinary decisions and ask UTAG to leave the VC alone to perform his functions,” government’s nominee on the governing council, John Darko told the media.
The Council has reiterated its vision to maintain discipline at all levels to ensure the smooth running of the University.
The Governing Council insisted that UTAG cannot compel the council to rescind its decision on the dismissed and suspended lecturers.
This came up at a media briefing by the Governing Council at the Winneba campus following the sanctions of some lecturers and non-teaching staff which resulted in a rampage by some students that brought about the closure of the University.
The Member of Parliament for Efuttu, Alexander Markin and the University Teachers Association of Ghana are spearheading the campaign for the removal of the Vice Chancellor following the dismissal of several lecturers and staff.
