A Circuit Court in Tepa in the Ahafo Ano North District of Ashanti region presided by His Lordship Johnson Addo has remanded four illegal miners two weeks into prisons custody for unlawful entry to Desiri Forest reserve.

The suspects were arrested by a team of forest guards led by the Tepa Range manager Palmer Aikens Amponsah on Monday 13th May 2019 and were subsequently handed over to Tepa district police command.

The suspects are Nkuah Micheal 34, Agyemang Duah 30, Amponsah Simon 31, Akwasi Agyare 40 all not native of Ahafo area.

The suspects pleaded not guilty to any of the charges leveled against them.

This compelled the Judge to remand the four miners into custody to reappear on 28th May 2019.

Speaking with Ultimate FM’s Isaac Justice Bediako, Mankranso Forest District Manager called on the general public to assist forestry commission in protecting precious Mankranso Desfiri Forest reserve which is currently under attack by farmers and illegal miners.

“I’m always concerned about how locals and other people enter our forest with impunity to carry out illegal mining among other illegal activities endangering precious species in the reserves. However, we will continue to fish these criminals out any time the sneak into the reserves at our blind side,’’ he assured.

He urged communities around the forest zones to cooperate with the commission in fighting illegal activities in the forest.

“Many believe the forest belongs to the government and careless in protecting it, I want to tell everyone that when the last tree dies the last person also dies. Therefore forest conservation must be a major priority of all Ghanaians. Without Forest how can we get fresh air to breathe, rain fail for farming among other use’’ he questioned.
