Police in the Eastern Region has announced that preliminary investigations into the alleged kidnapping at Odumase Krobo point to a false alarm.
The suspects who were riding in an unregistered SUV were saved by the police from a mob attack by irate residents in the area who raised alarm over the alleged kidnap.
The situation turned chaotic when the residents later massed up at the District Police Headquarters demanding to see the two kidnapped children who were said to have been kidnapped by the four suspects.
The Eastern Regional Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ebenezer Tetteh in an interview said the investigations point to a possible false alarm as parents of the children in question are corroborating the story of the suspects.
He added that investigations will nonetheless continue into the matter.
“The father actually gave the boy and the girl to them to be brought to Accra specifically to Madina for onward delivery to the mother. It was based on the fact that they were going to Madina and they decided to use the Eastern Corridor section of the road and they passed through Odumase and subsequently an alarm was raised.
“We have taken a statement from them and we proceed from there but I can tell you on authority that the two children who were onboard the vehicle have been taken by the police and are at the Odumase police station. The mother has contacted the police and is assisting police in investigations. We may be dealing with a false alarm but for the timely intervention of the Odumase Police, the story would have been different. Before the police got to the scene the crowd was hostile, yes, we want everybody to be security conscious and want everybody to be on the lookout for suspicious characters but we don’t approve or tolerate the situation where the fact that you suspect somebody to have engaged in crime you take the law into your own hand and try to exact your own pound of flesh,” DSP Tetteh added.
