The Chiefs and peoples of Winneba have resolved that never will they sit down unconcerned for any individual or group of persons to disturb the peace and security on the campuses of their cherished University of Education, Winneba.
They have therefore, served notice to the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Rev. Father Anthony Afful-Broni, to be up and doing by identifying and cracking the whip on any person or group of persons within the University fraternity who are sowing seeds of discord to disturb the peace and security of the school and the Winneba Township in general.
For instance, the Chief of Effutu Zongo, Salaki Sulemana Salaga IV, who is incensed about the compromised security situation on the campuses of the University and the Winneba community, has written to Rev. Father Afful-Broni, complaining bitterly about the conduct of the In-Charge, Basic Education, UEW, Alhassan Salifu Bawa and one Osei Barima, and calling for sanctions against them if he (Rev. Father Afful-Broni) is not benefiting from the actions of the duo.
The letter dated June 24, 2019, in part read “I write to bring to your attention the conduct of Alhassan Salifu Bawa in writing articles against our respected Member of Parliament, Hon. Afenyo-Markin. It appears you have endorsed Bawa’s behavior to continuously disrespect our MP. Ever since you succeeded in maligning Prof. Mawutor Avoke, and thereby, taking his position, UEW has not known peace. Today, the man who out of his genuine desire to see UEW progress and assisted you to attain your current seat of honour has become your target. It is so clear that Bawa is doing your bidding, the reason you haven’t found the need to discipline him much against your purported avowed principle as a disciplinarian”.
It added “I am by this letter demanding an immediate apology and retraction of all articles written by you against Hon. MP through Bawa and initiate disciplinary action, failing which I shall conclude that you are not worthy of the cassock you wear”.
The conflict situation has attracted the attention of the National Security in the region as intelligence picked has provoked the National Security Minister, Albert Kan-Dapaah, to write to the Minister of State In-Charge of Tertiary Education, to act swiftly to prevent any possible chaos that may come up to disturb the peace and security on the campuses of the UEW.
“Reports indicate that Neenyi Ghartey, Paramount Chief of Effutu Traditional Area, supporters and sympathisers of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), as well as concerned students of University of Education, Winneba (UEW), and some residents of Effutu community have expressed disquiet with social media postings by Alhassan Salifu Bawa, In-Charge of Basic Education, UEW, alleging that Alexander Afenyo-Markin, Member of Parliament (MP) for Effutu Constituency, is sabotaging NPP government with his attempt to remove Rev. Father Prof. Anthony Afful-Broni as Vice-Chancellor of UEW. The group further indicated that the postings are intended to tarnish the image of the MP to create the impression that there is chaos at UEW so as to bring the government into disrepute. Grateful for your attention”, the letter dated June 7, 2019 in part read.
