Madagascar, who were drafted in as match opponents for South Africa at the last minute when Zambia pulled out in protest at recent xenophobic violence, have also decided not to go ahead with the fixture.

Its football association apologised to the South African FA and also to “Malagasy fans who couldn’t wait” to watch the two sides play.

“Having consulted different national bodies, in particular regarding the safety of the Madagascar delegation and Malagasy citizens in South Africa, it is necessary and wise to decline the invitation,” the statement added.
