The President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo says he is well aware of orchestrated attempts by his political opponents to hang the tag of corruption on his neck and that of the government despite all the efforts they are doing to nip the canker in the bud.

“I am aware of the orchestrated attempts by my opponents to hang the tag of corruption on the necks of my government and myself, despite all the manifest efforts being made to deal with the phenomenon of corruption”, he noted in his address at the 2019 Ghana Bar Association Conference currently ongoing in Takoradi in the Western Region.

He therefore told his critics that he did not come into public life to enrich himself and that all attempts to tag him with the corruption tag will not work.

The governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) has come under severe attack by a cross section of the public for doing too little to address corruption in the system.

What is even more worrying to the critics of the governing party is the fact that some appointees have compromised their positions and are on a spree looting state resources while officialdom watches on unconcerned.

Those who have been cited and indicted to have committed serious offences against the state are either cleared by the seat of Government, Flagstaff House, or at best leave the matter unattended to.

However, the President in his address to the lawyers said “It is not my job to clear or convict any person accused of wrongdoing, or of engaging in acts of corruption. My job is to act on allegations of corruption by referring the issue or issues to the proper investigative agencies for the relevant enquiry and necessary action. That is exactly what has been done since I assumed the mantle of leadership on 7th January, 2017”, he underscored.

He added “So far, every single alleged act of corruption levelled against any of my appointees is being or has been investigated by independent bodies, such as CHRAJ, the CID, and in some cases, by Parliament itself. It cannot be the case that people are condemned on the basis of mere allegations. That is the law of the jungle”.
