True Drivers Union has expressed disquiet about government’s handling of the Petroleum sector in the country.
According to them, the government is insensitive towards the plight of drivers vis a vis the persistent fuel increment saying the union and its counterparts will advise themselves on what to do on the prevailing increase in fuel price at the pump.
“During the heat period of COVID-19 when international crude price dropped drastically this government increased the fuel price in this country. So if the Deregulation Price system put in place was working the fuel price in Ghana wouldn’t have been affected,” the Spokesperson for the Union, Yaw Barima said on Ghana Kasa on Agoo T.V/Kasapa 102.5 Fm today Tuesday.
The Institute for Energy Security (IES) says there is no justification for the introduction of new taxes/levies and the increases in existing fuel margins.
“The IES is still of the opinion that the current decision by government to introduce more taxes, leading to the 12.4 percent increase in fuel prices is miscalculated, careless and inconsiderate,” a statement by, IES Research Analyst, Fritz Moses said.
In view of this, the Driver Union said with the current situation of increase fuel price they have no option than to take some immediate actions to drum home their displeasure.
“We have been asked to pay for sanitation, so if the Transport Minister, Kweku Ofori Asiamah really thinks about drivers in this country he wouldn’t say that. We know that we are dealing with private partners, so if the government want to be insensitive to us what we can conclude on is the government is assisting its business partners to deceive us,” Spokesperson for the True Drivers Union alleged.
He said the President ought to be advised by his party on these matters to save the future electoral fortunes of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
“We don’t understand this huge fuel increment that has hit the nation. The government don’t respect drivers anymore, I recall in the days of former Finance Minister, Kwesi Botchway anytime he wants to take such a step of fuel increment he will make sure that such fuel increment happens after a budget is read. Today, even when the government is building a barracks for soldiers there would be fuel increase. We have never been consulted before ahead of any hike in Petroleum prices.”
