Opposition presidential candidate Nana Akufo-Addo looks on from the stage during his final campaign rally ahead of Friday's presidential election, in Accra, Ghana, Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2012. After five coups and decades of stagnation, the West African nation of 25 million is now a pacesetter for the continent's efforts to become democratic. Ghanaians will go to the polls on Friday to choose between four candidates, including President John Dramani Mahama, a former vice president who assumed the top post in July after the death of president John Atta Mills, and former foreign minister Akufo-Addo who lost the presidency by less than 1 percent in 2008. The flagbearer of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Akufo-Addo, has condemned the killing of his “good friend” and the “very vibrant” Upper East regional chairman of the party, Adams Mahama.

The “heartbroken” leader of the party has described today, Thursday May 21, 2015 as “a very sad day for all of us in the NPP.”

“I’ve just been informed about this tragic incident that has taken place in my absence from the country… Condolences to his wife and his family and calling upon the almighty God to give them the strength to bear this very terrible loss,” he said from his base in Europe.

He, however, urged the party members to “stay calm”.

“Nobody should take the law into their own hands… the matter is in the hands of the police.”

Nana Addo is currently in The Netherlands after visiting Germany on a 16-day European tour.

“I am cutting short my trip to Europe to come back home to join everybody in the party and in the country to say goodbye to our fallen colleague and then would soon see what needs to be done within the party and outside to respond to the situation.

“I’m heartbroken, he’s a good friend of mine, was a very strong aide to former Vice President Alhaji Aliu Mahama, he was a strong party person,” Nana Addo added.
