Bill Gates, the famed technological innovator, has revealed that he didn’t let his children use mobile phones until they turned 14.

Despite being the richest man in the world, the Microsoft founder keeps his family grounded by also banning smartphones from the dinner table.

“We don’t have cellphones at the table when we are having a meal, we didn’t give our kids cellphones until they were 14 and they complained other kids got them earlier,” he told The Mirror.

The billionaire philanthropist also admitted that a time limit is often set in the evening, after which his children – Jennifer, 20, Rory, 17, and Phoebe, 14 – are banned from any screen time, to ensure they get a good night’s sleep.

The blue light from the screens on electronic devices is thought to disrupt sleep, leaving some manufacturers to include ‘sleep modes’, which dial down the blue hues after a certain time in the evening.

Gates first founded Microsoft in 1975 with co-founder Paul Allen and it went onto to become the world’s biggest software firm.

While he is said to be worth around £67billion today, making him the richest person on the planet, Gates gives away a surprising amount of his wealth to humanitarian causes.

He stepped down as CEO of Microsoft in 2000 and along with his wife, founded the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

The Seattle-based corporation, which also includes legendary investor Warren Buffett as a trustee, aims to expand educational opportunities and improve access to computers in the US.

It also works globally to enhance healthcare and reduce poverty.

Gates finally stepped down as Chairman of Microsoft in 2014.
