Another rural electrification project is expected to be executed to roll more communities onto the national grid despite the difficulties of power supply confronting the country, kasapafmonline.com has learnt.
The China International Water & Electric Corporation (CWE) has been contracted to undertake the project, Minister of Power, Dr. Kwabena Donkor announced on the floor of Parliament on Thursday.
He was answering to a question asked by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament (MP) for Akim Swedru who sought to inquire from him when Adinkrom, Otwereso Praso, Yawdensukrom, Kroboase, Mensakrom, Apoli Ningo, Ofosukrom, Ofosukrom and Oforikrom would be connected to the National Electricity Grid.
Though the contracting documents and other agreements regarding the project are yet to be sent to Parliament for consideration and subsequent approval, sources familiar with the project say it would take off in the first quarter of 2016.
The Eastern, Ashanti, Volta, Western and Central Regions have been shortlisted as beneficiaries of the project.
In the Eastern Region, Ofosukrom and Kraboase, according to the Power Minster, have been captured as beneficiaries of the project. Nonetheless, Otwereso Praso, Apoli, Ningo, Yawdensukrom and Mensakrom communities do not form part of the project, noted Dr. Donkor.
It is however not clear which communities in the regions mentioned above are going to benefit from the project.
The current rural electrification project is being executed by Weldy Lamont and Associates from the United States of America.
