The Ashanti Regional Police Commander, DCOP Ken Yeboah has dismissed reports that soldiers have brutalized two persons to death at Tontokrom in the Amansie West District.
There have been reports that soldiers numbering about 20, unprovoked stormed the community at around 9:30pm Sunday and attacked the inhabitants beating them to pulp with two persons allegedly dying in the process.
The Chief of Tontokrom Nana Yaw Mensah, in an interview on Monday confirmed the attack insisting the development has thrown the entire town into a state of fear and panic since the town has never witnessed such attack.
According to him, persons who fled into the bush during the attack are gradually returning home in small groups. He feared the incident might have an effect on students in the town who are writing their BECE exams beginning today.
However the Ashanti Regional Police Commander, DCOP Ken Yeboah denying claims of deaths by the Chief, explained that the soldiers visited the community upon picking up information that some persons suspected to have taken part in the murdering of the late Capt. Maxwell Adam Mahama had come to the town in a bid to escape arrest.
“Even as I’m speaking now, the soldiers have handed over 11 persons to the police who are yet to be screen to establish their complicity in the crime. This is not the first time the soldiers are making such arrest, few days ago they arrested some persons who have admitted taking part in the lynching of the military captain. No one has been killed by the soldiers, I have challenged the chief to present to me the bodies of those killed if he insists the soldiers have murdered any resident.”
