According to him, even though his ex wife insisted on educating their ‘child’ abroad, he declined as the tuition fee in the university she suggested was very expensive, adding that he couldn’t afford that much since he’d invested all his money at that time.
“It hurts, it’s not becuase of anything thing, it’s just because I couldn’t afford to pay school fees which was too much for me at that time. The child was going to UK and the school fees was about £26,000 and I thought I’d invested all my money and I couldn’t afford it. They were three and I couldn’t start with one child and leave the others. So I took a decision for her to go to a good school here, so I looked for Ashasi University and that is what brought about all the problems. She said well…if I can’t afford the school fees abroad, then what else can I give her which and that she wants to leave the marriage.” Odartey Lamptey told Nana Aba Anamoah on Cheers on GHOne TV.
He said all these while, he didn;t know that the kids were not his and invested heavily in them, ensuring some of the best schools in Ghana such as Ghana International School (GIS).
Odartey Lamptey recently concluded to a protracted and bitter divorce from Gloria Appiah, his wife of 23 years.
DNA tests proved that the former Anderlecht, PSV Eindhoven and Aston Villa star was not the biological father of their three children, following which Gloria resorted to court action seeking an equal share of Lamptey’s properties, including the Glow Lamp Football Academy, acquired while they were married.
Justice Cecilia Don-Chebe Agbevey denied Gloria’s request and even gave her a 30-day ultimatum to vacate the seven-bedroom house at East Legon in which she lives. She was compensated with a four-bedroom house at Dome, as well as a car.
Odartey Lamptey in an interview revealed that he now regrets going against the advice from his family when he decided to marry her.
