President of The Ghana Boxing Authority, Peter Zwennes has revealed to Kasapa Sports that the slated bout between Ghana’s Joseph “KING KONG” Agbeko and Kenyan boxer Nick Otieno was not sanctioned.
The clash, which had received lot of buzz, was supposed to take place on June 30, 2017 at The Bukom Arena but had to be called off because certain legislative procedures had not been adhered to. Speaking to Adam Adjei on Kasapa Stadium on Saturday, the disgruntled President said,
“The bout was not sanctioned by the Ghana Boxing Authority because the promoters failed to comply with laid down procedures.
“Before a bout sees the light of day, the laid down regulations have to be followed which includes depositing money for the officials of the match et al who are pertinent to the success of the match. But Agbeko’s promoters failed in this regard.
“As the regulatory body for boxing in Ghana, we’ve been tasked to enforce the rules relating to boxing in terms of matches etc. Thus if we have bended the rules for his ( Agbeko’s) sake in order to accommodate him, yet the right procedures are not being complied with ,we will have no other choice than to let the law take its rightful course leading to continual delay of the match. If in two weeks time, the expected rules have not been adhered to yet advertisement for the match is audaciously in motion, we (GBA) will release a statement declaring the Agbeko team of an attempt to swindle Ghanaians,” He added.
However, he declared that the image of Ghana has not been dragged in the mud in any way since the GBA, which serves as the mouthpiece of the nation in boxing has not spoken on anything relating to the said match in question.
The said bout has been rescheduled to July 14.
