Pupils of Azanlogo primary school in Sherigu, a suburb of Bolgatanga in the upper east region, are compelled to use a mud structure which is used as drinking spot and the church of Christ as classrooms due to inadequate classrooms for teaching and learning.
The three unit classrooms block structure which was constructed in 2010 was supposed to accommodate primary One to Six. But the school currently can accommodate class One to class three pupils, while class four pupils are in the staff common room.
Class five students are using the church of Christ as their classroom and class six use a dilapidated mud drinking spot structure that has been converted into a classroom for the studies.
According to the school authorities, the government has awarded for the construction of another three classrooms block, but the contractor has abandoned the project for more than a year.
The students are therefore calling on the government and responsible authorities to come to their aid immediately because they find themselves helpless whenever it rains.
The head teacher of the school, Mrs Ayishatu Shirazu also lamented the negative impact of the situation on teaching and learning and appealed to the government to urgently come to their aid.
According to her, the KG pupils study under a tree, because they do not have classrooms and whenever it rains they have to move the KG pupils to class One and study goes to a halt.
“Our primary five and Six also study in a mud structure and church respectively. The contractor working on the additional three classrooms block is no where to be found, he has abandoned the project for more than a year and we don’t know what is happening, so we are appealing to the government to ensure a speedy completion of the project for us to alleviate the plight of the affected pupils.” Mad Ayishatu added.
