The Greater Accra Regional Executives of the National Democratic Congress(NDC), have discounted claims that a scheduled meeting with former President Mahama Friday is in the interest of energizing the campaigns for his comeback ahead of the 2020 elections.

An opposition movement within the NDC [Action Movement] has sent signals that Friday’s meeting with the regional executives will be a strategic meeting for the former leader to relaunch his 2020 campaign for the Presidency.

But the Greater Accra Regional Organizer of the NDC, Anthony Nukpenu has downplayed those claims by the group, saying the meeting is part of Mr. Mahama’s ‘Thank You’ tour across the country meant to show appreciation for the support of the rank and file of the party in his last administration.

“..The former President after our last election was to embark on a Thank You tour through the various rank and file which did not come off so after our last NEC meeting there were various discussions as to how we can go on a Thank you tour. It is a platform to thank the rank and file of the party on the role everybody played in the election…” he told Accra-based Citi FM.

Mr John Mahama was ousted from power by the ruling government in the last elections amidst blistering campaigns that the economy took a nosedive under his Presidency.

His party set a 13-member committee chaired by Prof. Kwesi Botchway that probed the NDC’s worst electoral defeat ever in history.

Eventhough, the 58 year old politician has not made public his interest of vying for the Presidency again, Political watchers say Mr Mahama retains a firm grip over the party’s base.
