Nurses at the Accra Psychiatric Hospital have called off their day-old strike.
The decision comes following a meeting with officials of Ministry of Health and the Minister of Employment and Labour Relations Haruna Iddrisu on Tuesday.
Over a hundred nurses took to the industrial action on Tuesday to press home their demand for their unpaid salaries. Their action left patients stranded as they had no alternative hospital in the capital to access health care.
However Employment Minister Haruna Iddrisu assured the nurses that their demands will be met by the end of September.
“At least by the end of September next month all outstanding issues would have been cleared…the Controller and Accountant General is ready to start inputting and computing, finalizing your names for salaries.
“I have even asked that special attention be given to psychiatric nurses because we are going to do it for 6000 nurses. That is being done. Indeed as I am speaking to you the officer at the Auditor General’s office together with the Health Ministry HR (human resource) are meeting.”
Spokesperson for striking nurses, Christian Adisenu noted that they were calling off their industrial action based on their promise made by Hon. Haruna Iddrisu.
He said that the love for the patients they care for we care is a factor for calling off the strike, adding that they will wait patiently to see whether the minister government will make good its promise.
