Senegalese singer Amy Collé Dieng was placed under arrest warrant on Tuesday in Dakar for “insulting the Head of state” and “spreading fake news.”

The young lady was arrested August 3rd by the Criminal Investigations Division (DIC) in the Plateau, Dakar.

The case concerns an audio recording broadcasted on WhatsApp and in which she described President Macky Sall as a “rogue and gecko.”

“I call on the Senegalese people to rise against the tyranny of President Macky Sall,” she said.

The offenses for which she is prosecuted are punishable, respectively, from six months to two years in prison and from one to three years in prison, according to the provisions of the Senegalese penal code.

According to his lawyer, Mr. Ciré Clédor Ly, her client is arbitrarily detained because there is a provision prohibiting committal for sentences of less than three years in prison.

“That is why we filed a request for statutory release for arbitrary detention,” Clédor said.
