The  National Teaching Council(NTC) is calling for dialogue with the various Teacher Unions to end the brouhaha over the supposed licensing of teachers in the country.

According to the NTC, the raging debates over the issue in the media is causing a wave of panic and confusion among their ranks, and wants the leadership of the teachers to meet the Council for meaningful discussions to be held on the matter.

The Acting Executive Secretary of the NTC, Madam Evelyn Oduro, told Kasapa 102.5 FM that her outfit has done “enough consultations” on the license exams since 2015 and has piloted the modalities for the move in at least 5 districts, including Shai Osoduko, Upper Manya, Ajumako, Savelugu-Nanton, and the Kassena Nankana districts.

The leadership of the Ghana National Association of Teachers(GNAT) wants the National Teaching Council to come up with the modalities to begin the regime of licensing exams for teachers in the country, insisting that they have agreed to the decision, but the modalities is long overdue.

“It behoves on the Council to develop the modalities for that. The teachers are aware of that; for five years we have educated our members to know that there will be a process for licensing, and at the moment what we are waiting for is the process to set the ball rolling.” Mr. David Ofori Acheampong, the General Secretary of GNAT told Kasapa 102.5 FM Tuesday.

But the Acting Executive Secretary of the NTC, is urging for calm among the teachers saying it is yet to take a decision on the move.

She adds: “there is no need for them to panic. This is a professional exams and not WAEC exams.”

According to her, “In the law it is stated that we won’t grant anybody a license without he/she taking exams, but the examination could be in any form. They should exercise restraint on the matter, because the kind of examination or whatever it is we are looking at, whether it is an interview, research, your portfolio, etc, whatever it is the Council will take a decision on it.”
