Nigeria coach Salisu Yusuf has admitted his side paid dearly for their mistakes in the humiliating 4-1 defeat to Ghana in the final of the 2017 WAFU Cup of Nations.

The Super Eagles were off colour and struggled to contain a vibrant Black Stars side that looked hungrier for success at Cape Coast Sports Stadium on Sunday, September 24.

“We made some errors and we got punished for it. Defensively we didn’t do our job well, but it’s football,” said Yusuf.

“This is the first time we conceded in the tournament and I think the group has done very well coming to the final without conceding a goal.”

Yusuf added that he wants his side to draw positives from their abject display ahead of next year’s African Nations Championship (CHAN).

“In the final, you can lose and it is normal – somebody must win and someone must lose,” explained the Super Eagles coach.

“The most important thing is we have an idea of our CHAN team now. We now our negatives and we know our positives, so it’s a great tournament for us as a country.”
