The National Chairman of the People’s National Convention(PNC), Bernard Mornah says the main opposition National Democratic Congress(NDC) must be willing to sacrifice all other competition for Alban Bagbin to stand as the party’s Flagbearer in 2020.

Mornah contends that if the same individual whom he went into contest with during the parliamentary contest for the Nadowli-Kaleo seat in 2016 is again vying for the Presidential Candidate for the NDC, the party ought to show the phenomenal support it gave Bagbin when he contested for the parliamentary seat.

“…For me where I sit and the kind of campaign that was spirited in the Nadowli Kaleo constituency, the messages that the NDC bigwigs came and gave, is the reason why nobody should contest Bagbin in this election; is the reasons why if Bagbin opt out to say that I want to contest as Flagbearer, everybody should go and sleep. Because I heard some of the messages that Bagbin is the most experienced person and they cannot sacrifice him. And that anybody that is contesting him is like contesting their god. Today if your god say I want to be the leader of the party, the party should be strong enough to say that every other candidate should subordinate your ambitions for the god in our party, Period!” he told host Fiifi Banson on Anopa Kasapa on Kasapa 102.5 FM.

According to Mornah, Mr. Bagbin, the longest serving Member of Parliament under the Fourth Republic, is over-qualified to become the party’s Flagbearer to lead the party into contest in the 2020 elections, if he claims he mentored former President John Mahama and Akufo-Addo respectively.

“Listening to Alban on some of the things that he said, and according to him, he mentored President Mahama in parliament, he mentored President Akufo-Addo in parliament, because he went to parliament in 1993 and both Akufo-Addo and former President Mahama joined the legislature in 1997. And all of them served under him; he’s the oldest. So if the two can become President, he’s more than qualified to be President, I support him, Mornah said.

Speculative mill

The speculative mill has been busy, with names such as a former Trade and Industry Minister, Dr Ekow Spio-Garbrah; a former Vice-Chancelor of the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), Prof. Joshua Alabi; a former Vice-President, Mr Paa Kwesi Amissah-Arthur; a former Chief Executive of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), Mr Sylvester Mensah, NDC activist and a member of the main opposition Communication team, Stephen Atubiga  as well as the longest serving MP, and Second Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin popping up as possible prospects.

Meanwhile, Mr Alban Bagbin has given the strongest indication that he’s likely to contest for the party’s primary as the Presidential candidate.

Speaking at an event to celebrate his 25th year in Ghanaian politics, Mr. Bagbin said his presidential ambitions were “as clear as daylight.”
