The Ghana United Nations Association (GUNA) has called for the immediate cessation of the crimes and impunity meted against journalists in the country.

According to the Association, democracy cannot thrive in any civil society without the journalist and media platform, hence call on all Ghanaians to protect the noble profession of journalists.

In a statement signed by Rev. Kingsley Osafo-Mireku, Director of Administration of GUNA to mark International Day to End Impunity and Crimes against Journalists, commended Journalists for their critical role they play in interfacing the government of the day and the citizens in their quest to get the populace informed and educated on both national and social matters.

“Yet, in their quest to inform and educate the populace about the happenings in our  society, a number of journalists have suffered serious injustices and mortal abuse by politically aligned thugs and hooligans, public officials and agencies even to extents, where some of them have lost their lives in the line of duty.

“We are also calling on all political parties to discipline their followers to see the journalist as
agents of development thus, advance national security, peace and development.

GUNA, further congratulated gallant journalists who have unearthed rot and corruption in
our country. “To those who have fallen in the line of duty, we say adieu to you.”

The Association further urged the National Communications Authority (NCA) to reconsider its decision to close defaulting media houses as that will render thousands of journalists jobless.

It added that, this will also obliterate free speech which is one of the cardinal principles in the practice of democracy.
