The Accra Central District court presided over by Justice Worlanyo Kotoku has discharged 8 accused persons standing trial for the murder of Major Maxwell Mahama at Denkyire-Obuasi now New Denkyira Obuasi, on 9 May 2017.

Fourteen accused persons of the 22 are therefore to face the committal proceedings which will begin on January 11, 2018.

Kasapa FM’s Court correspondent, Daakyehene Ofosu Agyemang reported that a Chief state Attorney, Evelyn Keelson told the court that upon the instructions of the Attorney General, there are not enough evidence to prosecute the six and there orders for their discharge.

The lucky ones are Yaw Annor, Philip Badu, Kwame Agyei, Solomon Sackey, Anthony Amoah, Ebenezer Appiah, Solomon Kwadwo Fordjour and Vivian Asahene.

Background

The deceased, Major Mahama, an officer of the 5th Infantry Battalion, at Burma Camp in Accra but on a national assignment at Denkyira Obuasi now known as New Obuasi in the Central Region, was said to have been on his daily jogging session on Monday [May 29, 2017], when some angry youth of the town attacked him, on suspicion that he was an armed robber.

The Police subsequently arrested over fifty suspects who had fled the town to other regions in the country.

Further investigations reduced the number of suspects to 19.
