Ghana has ranked 81 out of 180 countries in the latest Corruption Perception Index (CPI) released on Wednesday.
The country scored 40 as against last year’s score of 43, which means Ghana has dropped 11 places in the latest CPI.
The survey captures the views and opinions of business people and experts across various countries on indicators such as corruption, embezzlement, bribery, extortion among other especially in the public sector.
The Programmes Officer at the Ghana Integrity Initiative, Mary Adda in an interview stated that once business people continue to experience corruption, bribery, extortion, it is not surprising that Ghana will continue to dip.
“It’s an unfortunate situation but the truth is that over the past few years, Ghana has dropped. In 2015 Ghana 47, in 2016 we scored 43, and 2017 we’ve scored 40 which means we’re retrogressing instead of making progress in the fight against corruption. That’s the unfortunate truth as the CPI indicates.
“The issues of corruption continue to remain real, if I ask you, do you experience bribery, it is exactly what the person has experienced he’ll talk about, do experience public sector officers extorting and promoting issues of conflict of interest, that’s a daily occurrence in our system. These indicators have not been worked on unfortunately, even though we see pockets of interventions going on.”
