The reinstated Chief Accountant of the Electoral Commission (EC) Kwaku Owusu Agyei Larbi has refunded an amount of over GHC436,000 to the Election management body.

Mr Agyei Larbi was in July 2017 asked to proceed on leave by the Economic and Organized Crime Office (EOCO) to allow for investigations into claims of embezzlement of the EC’s endowment funds.

His reinstatement follows a directive from EOCO for the Electoral Commission to recall him to enable him refund the money in his custody.

The refund of the money was announced by lawyer for Mr Agyei Larbi,  Jerry John. K Asiedu in a statement addressed to the Presidency.

“Our client has retrieved from the safe in his office an amount of GHC436,420 with the approval of the Human Resource Director of the Electoral Commission to pay same into the EC IGF account at a GCB Bank. Attached here to and mark C is a copy of memo endorsed by the Human Resource Director. He has paid the amount into the designated IGF account of the Electoral Commission at the GCB Bank on the 11th day of July 2018. Attached here to is marked D, a copy of the GCB Bank receipt as evidence of payment into the account by our client.

“Under the circumstances it is evident that our client has fully complied with the recommendation by the Chief Justice’s Committee which was referred to your high office for implementation. Our client therefore humbly request that this is brought to the attention of the Attorney General and all other necessary agents tasked with the implementation of the Committee’s report,” the statement read in part.
