The Chairman of Education Committee of Parliament, Siaka Steven says the proposed introduction of the shift system under the government’s free Senior High School policy will be the sure way to ease congestion and optimize instructional hours.
“We have had proposals and opinions from well meaning Ghanaians to introduce the shit system at the secondary school level, this we believe will be one of the measures that can help us come out of the congestion we are witnessing at the SHS level as at now” he told Kasapa 102.5 FM Wednesday.
There have been reports of congestion in several public senior high schools after the introduction of governments’ popular flagship program, free SHS.
Although several critics including the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) slammed government over the decision, Mr. Siaka believes the program will be sustained, despite it numerous challenges.
He told host of Anopa Kasapa, Morning show, Kwaku Owusu Adjei  that following the poor performance recorded in the 2018 WASSCE results, government is among other measures considering some reforms in the school’s curriculum that will ensure better results in the coming years.
“The government is putting measures in place to deal with the situation, starting from Kindergarten, that’s why the government is building 200 kindergarten schools across the country. Eighty of such schools have been started, which is in a bid to reform the fundamentals and the first approach to solving the ailing educational system. This time too, with the free shs, students will be required to be in school the very day school is reopened and then begin classes the following day, no student will be allowed to stay back at home for days before reporting to school”
