Some irate youth from Asawase Zongo have stormed the Kumasi Central Mosque in the Ashanti Region, burning tyres to express their anger over the recent shootings of seven residents by the police.
The unrestrained mob who mounted road blocks in front of the mosque, chanted war songs demanding that justice be done, following what they claim is the killing of innocent persons the Police claim are armed robbers.
It took the timely intervention of the Imam to calm the charged you, and further advised them not to resort to violence.
The Police on Tuesday gunned down seven suspected armed robbers. The Police claim they only returned fire after the suspected robbers shot at the police patrol vehicle which had been deployed to the area to track down some armed robbers who had shot and killed a police officer last week.
But news of the killings sparked uproar as residents claimed the deceased were law abiding innocent person who never engaged in armed robbery.
The Municipal Chief Executive for Asokore Mampong in the Ashanti Region, Alidu Seidu confirmed that three of the seven suspected armed robbers killed at Manso-Nkwanta are known members of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) Vigilante group, Delta Force.
According to him, he’s utterly shocked by the death of the innocent young men who are not involved in any criminal activity, adding that he can vouch for them any day.
“I know three out of the seven are NPP sympathizers and I know them personally. They are people that I can never point a single finger on them to say that they’ve been involved in any act of armed robbery. So it took me by surprise, everybody is so marveled about the way the events have unfolded, I’m on my way to take briefing from the Regional Police Commander on what might have happened. Where did the thing happen, where were they? There are questions that I need clarification for. This has taken all of us by surprise.
“One of the three, the one called Bashiru has been training cadets, he goes to schools and train cadets. He’s been commanding parades during Independence Day celebrations. Police and Military know this boy very well ,” Hon. Alidu Seidu noted.
