Twenty students from Agortime Senior High School have received their cash packages under government’s Secondary Education Improvement Project (SEIP) scholarship scheme at Kpetoe in the Agortime-Ziope District.
The $500 a-year scholarship has been instituted to support needy but brilliant day students in 125 selected day senior high schools across the country.
This year, two thousand 500 students have been selected from the beneficiary schools for the package.
The aim of the scholarship is to increase enrollment in the selected schools, improve retention and completion rate as well as academic performance.
The Headmistress of the Agortime Senior High School, Sylvia Emma Draphor who presented the money to the parents of the beneficiary students expressed gratitude to the government for selecting the school as one of the beneficiaries.
Mrs. Draphor challenged the beneficiaries to learn hard because the retention of the scholarship is tied to academic performance.
She disclosed that the scholarship is not transferable to another school and so any student who decides to leave the school loses the scholarship.
She also advised the parents of the beneficiaries to use the money for its intended purpose.
Some beneficiaries who spoke to Volta Star Radio expressed grateful to government for the initiative.
