Black Star International Film Festival (BSIFF) organizers honoured veteran actress, Grace Nortey with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the third Awards Gala held at the Accra International Conference Centre on Friday, August 17.
The actress who played multi-character lead roles on Ghanaian television in the 1990s was given a citation for her a vital role in the development of the local film industry.
The Gala Awards which is meant to appreciate the good works of film makers in Africa is expect to attract key stakeholder of the movie industry and dignitaries from other fields of endeavour.
The festival opened last week at the Silverbird Cinema with British crime-drama “Yardie”, a film based on a novel of the same name written by Victor Headley a Jamaican-born British author.
BSIFF is a nonprofit organisation creating global connections through film and helping to bridge the gap between African cinema and the world.
It is a festival focused on the Business of film and advocacy in the region. Its goal is to create a platform where filmmakers can learn, network, do business and celebrate their craft within an African context.
The honorable Minister of Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Ghana, madam Hon. Catherine Abelema Afeku represented H.E. The President of the Republic of Ghana Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo at the BSIFF Awards over the weekend.
The Founding President of the Black Star International Film Festival (BSIFF), Juliet Yaa Asantewaa Asante, urged the President, Nana Akufo-Addo, who was represented by the Minister for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mrs Catherine Afeku, to pay more attention to the movie scene.
Addressing guests at the event, Mrs Catherine Afeku, said he felt very much at home because at a point he wanted to become a film director.
For her part, the Minister for Tourism, Arts and Culture said her ministry is very much in support of the Black Star International Film Festival. “In our 2019 budget, there will be provision for the BSIFF, we want to see a robust film industry,” she said.
