The Member of Parliament for Yapei-Kusawgu constituency in the Northern Region, John Jinapor has said that the responses given by the Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Ernest Addison in the probe by the Finance committee of parliament vis a vis the banking crisis in the country was unconvincing.
He told Kweku Owusu Adjei on Anopa Kasapa on Kasapa 102.5 FM that the validity of answers given by the Governor left more to be desired.
“To be frank with you, I wasn’t satisfied with some of the answers given by the Governor, I think we had enough time to interrogate this issues” he said.
John Jinapor, who is a member of the Finance Committee believes that certain answers he elicited from the Governor of the Central Bank wasn’t forth coming as he had prepared adequately to understand the fundamentals that led to the collapse of the seven indigenous banks.
“We had serious argument with the Governor …..the answers he gave were very evasive. He gave those licenses so he should have answers to that” he said.
He however, wished that proceeding of the committee was aired live for anyone who had interest in the matter to follow the work of the committee without raising any doubt in the minds of interested parties.
“I wish proceedings was aired for everyone to watch, but allowing the public and the press to observe the procedure would have disturbed the work of the committee because we didn’t want a situation where the proceedings will send panic to the market, that is one of the main reasons” he explained.
Meanwhile, pressure group OccupyGhana earlier made a last-ditch effort to ensure the legislature’s probe into the banking crisis was made public.
The group in a letter to the Speaker of Parliament insisted that making the hearings, which started yesterday [Wednesday], public “will restore public confidence in the beleaguered banking sector and go some way towards repairing its tarnished image.”
