The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA), has been recognised for transforming its Procurement strategies that has seen the organisation reduce drastically, its bureaucratic processes in rendering services to the public.
The Authority was the proud recipient of the Emerging Improvement in Procurement & Supply Chain Award at the maiden Ghana Procurement & Supply Chain Awards 2018 which was held at the plush Movenpick Hotel in Accra last Friday.
It’s Deputy Director of Procurement and Stores, Dr. Robert Kweku Tay, under whose care the Authority’s Procurement processes has seen massive transformation, was also recognised and inducted into top 20 Procurement and Supply chain leaders of the country.
Dr. Tay commenting on the award in an exclusive interview told kasapafmonline.com that the DVLA is delighted that their efforts have been recognised.
He attributed their success story to the recent introduction of high powered technological equipment in the issuance of driver’s license of which procurement and supply chain played a key role in acquisition and placement .
“The DVLA has been in the news for the wonderful things that are happening at the Authority. Having invested so much into technological advancement, you see that this time the issuance of driver’s license and the printing of documentation have taken a different turn. We have a prestige center that within 30 minutes you can walk away with your driver’s license and maximum two weeks you can also take your driver’s license and you are gone which wasn’t the case before. We hold this to our investment into state of the arts technological equipment and indeed procurement and supply chain played a major role in ensuring that these equipments are in place at the right time for this to be happening as it is. So, it shouldn’t be a surprise for people to see the DVLA win an award. Already we have received a lot of awards – the CEO and the Authority itself have received a lot of awards for the good things that are happening in recent times at the DVLA. So, to us, this award didn’t come to us as a surprise”, he noted.
Dr. Tay was hopeful that with the awards which is going to be an annual event will bring competition into the procurement & supply chain sector.
“Procurement has been around and its been pushed to the background for a very long time. Meanwhile, if you follow the little interactions that have gone on today, you will see the key role that procurement is playing; the value that procurement is bringing onboard; the savings that procurement is driving; and the quality that procurement is assuring institutions. So, it is a call in that direction that has been too long overdue. So, I think that we are happy that today we have seen the light and thankfully, it is going to continue on yearly basis that will bring some competition and a wake up call to the procurement fraternity”, he stressed.
