The Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA) has launched a scathing attack on ECOWAS commission accusing it of bias.

“I’m very disappointed in ECOWAS commission itself. ECOWAS has to sit up. It is not about some few people coming again to your doorstep and you issue command here and there. They have to come down and do investigations; the proper due diligence. Have they even evaluated the ECOWAS protocol itself? President of GUTA, Joseph Kwaku Obeng,  questioned in an interview with Accra-based Citi FM.

The Nigerian traders held protest marches in their home country after which they petitioned ECOWAS to probe what they say is the harassment and intimidation of Nigerian trading activities in Ghana.

But President of GUTA, Joseph Kwaku Obeng, says the allegations by the Nigerian traders that it is intimidating them in Ghana is untrue.

He insisted his association has been very civil in its handling of the matter. According to him, Nigerian traders who conform to the directives regarding operation of foreign businesses in Ghana are enjoying their trading.

He believes complaints of unfair treatment were coming from foreign traders who were flouting the rules on the conduct of foreign businesses in the country.

“Those who are doing the right thing have been exempted. Even in Kumasi, so many people have been exempted.. Those who have closed their shops have done so because they are afraid they do not have VAT tax numbers. Nobody is chasing anybody. We have been very civil.”
