The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) branch of the University Teachers Association (UTAG) has declared an indefinite strike.

The decision was reached after a meeting by the lecturers on campus Friday.

This follows government’s dissolution of the University’s governing council after a violent students demonstration on Monday, accusing the University’s management of failing to stop physical abuse on them by the school’s security.

The lecturers say they see government’s action as an attack on academic freedom.

“After much deliberations we’ve all decided that the government as a matter of urgency should restore the Governing Council of the University and also we also don’t recognize the interim management committee set up by the government yesterday. We’ve withdrawn our teaching services until government restores them back to where they belong to. We have declared strike with immediate effect,” Professor Eric K. Forkuo President of KNUST-UTAG
