Teachers and Educational Workers Union, KNUST chapter (TEWU) has warned government to allow appropriate bodies mandated to spearhead the re-constitution of the governing council at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology to do so, without any undue interference.

Members of TEWU say this is unlawful and breach of the university statutes.

Government has announced that it will not allow old representatives of the dissolved governing council to join the yet to be re-constituted governing council.

According to government, the old council is a party to the impasse that took place on the school’s campus, therefore members of the old council are unqualified to join the new one.

But speaking to Kasapa News, President of the union in the Ashanti Region, Charles Attah said, government’s stance would only worsen the plight of the school and also prolong the re-opening date, which should be in some few days to come.

“Government should not dictate to us because it pays us. Our salaries are not from the NPP’s account, it is from Ghanaians. Ghanaians voted the government into power, so government shouldn’t think because it pays us the monies are from its pocket” he said.

In response to what the union will do if government does not back down on its decision, he said “Then the school will not be opened, because why will the school be opened if government holds on to its entrenched position, UTAG is on strike and we also have long meeting”.

Meanwhile, University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) are also against government’s decision.
