The Ghana Police Service has blamed drivers non – compliance with traffic regulations for the recent reports of road crashes recorded on some major stretches in the country.
Several accidents have been recorded in the space of two days, causing the lives of many and injuring hundreds of some other people with the latest accident involving five cars on the Nsawam-Ofankor road in the Greater Accra Region where three people were said to have died on the spot.
The police, overwhelmed by the happenings, are calling on motorists to comply with road safety regulations in order to minimize the number of road crashes being witnessed in recent times.
Speaking to Kasapa News, Director in charge of Research, Education and Training at the Motor Transport and Traffic Directorate (MTTD), DSP Alexander Kwaku Obeng said the situation can only be curbed when drivers commit to proper road safety regulation.
“There are regulations established for drivers to adhere to, but as it stands now, drivers have failed to adhere to those regulations. If car owners, drivers, passengers and pedestrians do not adhere to simple rules, accidents on our roads will continue”.
He added: “We have researched and understand that, most of the accidents on our roads are as a result of our behavior. If he’s not speeding, he may be rushing by driving through unauthorized routes. These are all things drivers do on the roads which results in preventable accidents”.
Meanwhile, the police has assured the citizenry of massive police presence as we approach the festive season.
