Headmaster of West Africa Senior High School (WASS) at adenta in Accra, Ofori Antwi has lamented over the rampant killing of his students by speeding vehicles on the Madina-Adenta highway over government inability to complete footbridges on the road.
Yesterday’s accident, involving a first year student of the school who was returning home after registering for the gold track, brings to six the number of students who have been hit by vehicles on that stretch of the road, Mr. Antwi revealed.
Although there has been several calls by well-meaning residents of the area to government, to have the footbridges completed, it seems to be falling on deaf ears.
Mr. Antwi told Accra based Citi Fm that he has personally sent hundreds of letters to the ministry of roads and highway to come to their aid but to no avail.
“I have written several letters to the ministry but nothing is still being done here. This has been there for years and the authorities are very much aware of it so we are hoping that one of these days, they will come to our aid and fix the problem for us” he said.
The death of the students yesterday led to a massive protest where the road was blocked, amidst burning of car tyres. It took the intervention of the police who had to fire rubber bullets and tear gas to disperse the crowd.
