The Ghana Education Service (GES) says it has not given any senior high school approval to organize extra classes for its students.

According to the GES, it will amount to illegality for any school to organize extra classes without any communication or official authorization from them as the mother body.

This follows an investigation by the Finder Newspaper which revealed that, despite the implementation of government flagship program free shs, parents still cough out huge sums of money for extra classes for their wards.

Schools such as Presbyterian Boys’ Senior High School (PRESEC), Accra Academy (Accra Aca), Tema Senior High School (Temasco), Chemu Senior High School – Tema, St. John’s Grammar Senior High School, Armed Forces Senior High Technical at Burma Camp, Benkum Senior High – Larteh, and Pope John Senior High School and Minor Seminary have begun classes for second year students in bid to make up for lost periods resulting from the double track system implementation.

While some of the classes are being held on school campuses, others are being conducted outside the school premises by teachers of public schools.

The amounts being charged range from GH₵150 to GH₵500 for two months, depending on the course the student is pursuing.

But speaking to the Head of the Public Relations unit of the GES, Cassandra Twum Ampofo on Kasapa Fm, she said it is wrong and totally against the service for any school to organize extra classes and charge students such an amount.

“No school has been given approval to organize extra classes in any school. The GES has not given any school such permission so it will be wrong to have schools charging students for extra classes” she said.
