Celebrated playwright, Uncle Ebo White has said social platforms are the reasons why most marriages are unable to stand the test of time.

Mentioning Instagram and WhatsApp as the main social media platforms destroying relationships, Uncle Ebo shared his opinion that in the past the process one had to go through to communicate their feelings to their partners discouraged them from acting in their moment of anger.

According to him, in this dispensation, messaging has become instant and easy to send.

Several individuals have also shared same views that electronic communication (such as websites for social networking and microblogging) through which users create online communities to share information, ideas, personal messages, and other content has made couples live unfaithfully.

“In your case, you have the thing instantly (referring to Instagram and WhatsApp). So you are working out your anger right there and then. People have not learned the art of our parents and grandparents. They will tell you that there is some magic in the pillow. Go and sleep over it. Let your pillow speak to you. Because how you feel in the moment will not be how you feel ten minutes afterward.” He said on JOY FM

A third of all divorce filings in 2011 contained the word “Facebook,” according to Divorce Online. And more than 80 per cent of U.S. divorce attorneys say social networking in divorce proceedings is on the rise, according to the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers.

The effect of social media on relationships can positively impact couples who spend a lot of time apart. Others believe that when people share their best lives on social media, it makes couples sometimes compare their mundane lives with other’s exciting lives, which can create destructive comparisons.
