Parliament has today, March 05,2019 passed the Public Holidays amendment bill 2018.

The minority who are opposed to the bill walked out of the House during its passage.

Minority leader Haruna Iddrisu led his side out of the chamber insisting the NPP government wants to rewrite the history of Ghana.

The bill is seeking to scrap AU and Republic Days as public holidays and introduce January 7 as Constitution day.

Minority’s Position

Earlier, the Minority leader said the government’s determination to amend the Public Holiday Act that will result in changing the Founder’s Day to Founders’ Day and which will be celebrated on August 4 as a public holiday instead of the September 21 is “repugnant to the facts” and therefore cannot be part of that process.

According to the report of the Committee on Defence and Interior, September 21 will now be observed as Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Day and would continue to be a public holiday.

The Minority Leader, Haruna Iddrisu, who made this observation said attempts to alter the history of Ghana is a dent on the image of the first President of the country.

But the Minister for the Interior, Ambrose Dery, on his part said the amendment to the Holiday Act does not seek to re-write the history of Ghana but rather put it into proper perspective.
