The Minority in Parliament has watered down concerns that approving the use of motorcycle for commercial purposes will increase fatalities recorded on the country’s roads.

The legalization or otherwise of the operations of what is popularly known as Okada has come up for intense debate.

Whereas some highlight the convenience to motorists and job creation potential others believe that the legalization will promote lawlessness.

The Ranking Member of the Parliamentary Committee for Transport, Governs Kwame Agbodza tells Starr News a future NDC government will make the necessary changes if the current administration fails to do so.

“I think that when we were passing the law maybe we should have thought much more deeper. I disagree entirely with all those people who say that by legitimizing the use of motorcycles and tricycles as a means of transportation will increase road accidents. Already they are doing it, in any case people in bus coaches in air connection are dying from accidents, planes are falling down so what difference does it make? A city of New Delhi of about 30 million people about the population of Ghana, I’ve seen multitudes of tricycles being used and it works very well. I will say without a doubt that India is more developed than Ghana and it works.

He added: “So my view is that change the law, legitimize it, put in place regulations and standards that make it safe, make sure the people who operate this have some training.”
