Young actress, Clara Amoateng Benson, widely known on Ghanaian screens as Maame Serwaa has called on colleague actors, producers and directors based in Kumasi to help save the dying movie industry.

She blamed the declining movie business on the influx of telenovelas on most television channels.

“I don’t really know much. But I think it’s because of the new trend in town, the ‘Kumkum Bagyas’ and all that. And I think right now, everybody owns a decoder in his or her house,” Maame Serwaa said

She added that social media channels such as YouTube have also contributed to declining of Kumawood movies.

“We don’t have the CD’s and the DVD players. So if my new movie is out, someone can just go on YouTube and watch it. Someone can do anything and just watch it without even buying the CD, so it made the system very slow,” Maame Serwaa added

Speaking with Andy Dosty on Daybreak Hitz, Maame Serwaa shared her thoughts of possible solutions on how to revive the movie industry based in Kumasi.

“I always tell myself that why don’t we the actors and the actresses, our producers and our directors, sit down and talk about this matter. Then we know how far we want to go with our industry. Because you can’t just sit somewhere and just say that the Kumkum Bagyas and the decoders have made our industry go down.”

The 20 years old actress called on industry players based in Kumasi to come together as a team to generally and professionally find a solution to the pending movie issue.

“We have to come together as a team. Meet, talk and look at the aspects of the problems we have in our industry. Because it’s not basically about the decoders, we have to come together.”
