Apart from the efforts onboard to eventually take them off the streets, security which is also key in the welfare of hawkers in Ghana, is in the mean time being considered, Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection, Nana Oye Lithur has disclosed.
She said, most of them have reported cases of rape and physical abuses and has therefore, engaged the police to pay special attention to them.
Speaking to Kafui Dey on Morning Starr programme on Starr FM 103.5, Oye Lithur highlighted efforts by her Ministry to deal with hawker issues and ultimately ensure their quality of life.
It is reported that in Accra alone, about 18,000 of the hawkers have been identified within the whole metropolis.
However she said: “the Ministry is engaging 5,000 to take them off the streets”.
The targeted number, she noted, are undergoing training in several areas like soap making and Batik amongst others which will inure to their benefits in future.
