A deputy General Secretary of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) party, Koku Anyidoho has said the decision by the National Executives to join regional executives to vet its aspiring parliamentary candidates has turned out to be a wise move.

According to him, if this novelty had not been introduced by the party, there would have been a high number of disqualification done outside the party’s constitution.

The NDC started its vetting of Parliamentary aspirants last Tuesday 22nd September where vetting took place in the Eastern, Upper East, Central and Upper West Regions, while Ashanti, Northern, Western and Brong Ahafo Regions held theirs on Wednesday.

Vetting has been suspended temporarily. The Greater Accra and Volta Regions vetting which will be the last phase of vetting will be held on 29th and 30th September.

Speaking on Kasapa 102.3 FM, Koku Anyidoho stated that the national executives’ joining the various vetting committees was a move in the right direction which has so far yielding positive results.

“The National Executive members being part of the various vetting committees has ensured there are very few disqualification of aspirants. We don’t have any interest in who becomes the parliamentary candidate for any constituency.

There would have been a lot of problems if the vetting had been left to be conducted at the regional and constituency levels, since most of the regional executives have their parochial interest which would have tilted the vetting process towards a particular direction”.

Koku Anyidoho added that once the National Executives are part of the vetting process, at the end of the day any aspirant disqualified will then know that it was done on a fair basis and in the larger interest of the party.

The NDC goes to the polls on November 7 to elect its Parliamentary and Presidential Candidates ahead of the 2016 elections.
