Former Brong Ahafo Regional Chairman of the opposition National Democratic Congress(NDC) John Owusu Agyemang says the renaming of the University of Energy and Natural Resources after Prime Minister of Ghana, Dr. Abrefa Busia, is not befitting enough.
President Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo over the weekend commended the University of Mines and Energy over their decision to rename the newly established University located in the late former Prime Minister’s home region of Bono after the latter.
The President lauded “the decision is an excellent one,” which will receive his blessing “once the parliamentary process has been completed.”
The President added, “It is wholly fitting that this great man, who viewed freedom as a great ally of progress, should be properly honoured by a grateful posterity, and, especially, by citizens of his native Bono Region.”
But speaking to host Henry Lord on Ejura based Naagyei FM, Lawyer John Owusu Agyeman stated that Dr. K. A Busia was a national figure and as such should have been honoured with a facility in the national capital, Accra, and not in the Bono Region as has been done.
“We are being told that President Akufo Addo has the intention of renaming the University of Ghana in Accra after his Uncle, J.B Danquah. If it is the President’s intention to honour people in the region they come from then why doesn’t he honour the memory of J.B Danquah with something in the Eastern Region where he hails from and is rather going to do that at the national level when the man was never a President of this country. Busia was once upon a time a President and he rather deserves to be honoured by renaming the University of Ghana after him.”
