Six persons have been confirmed dead after a mining pit in Wassa Manso in the Mpohor Wassa District caved in.
The deceased were engaging in illegal mining [galamey] when the unfortunate incident happened on Thursday.
The Western Regional NADMO Coordinator, Abdul Mohammed Ganiyu told Kasapa News that soon after the incident happened, other illegal miners who were mining at the scene of the accident hurriedly moved an excavator nearby to try and rescue their colleagues but unfortunately, the six were found dead when their bodies were retrieved.
He said the bodies of the deceased have been conveyed to the Efia Nkwanta Hospital.
Abdul Mohammed Ganiyu added that the matter was yet to be officially reported to the police as the miners have deserted the town for fear of being arrested.
